While this site is primarily dedicated to the Film and Video Games worlds, certain things in the world of Television deserve a little bit of our attention as well. Last night The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences held the 60th Primetime Emmy awards. As far as I can see there weren't too many suprises, but see for yourself after the jump. For those of you interested I've included the complete list of technical winners as well. Come on... you know you care what show has the best Hairstylist! Check out the lists after the jump.
While most of you have probably never heard of Don LaFontaine, I can almost guarantee that all of you have heard his voice. The man known as the "King of Voiceovers" died Monday afternoon in Los Angeles, while the official cause of death has not been released it is believed to be from complications from a collapsed lung. LaFontaine has voiced over 5,000 movie trailers, including T2: Judgement Day, Independence Day, and The Simpsons Movie, among MANY MANY others. Don is largely credited for the famous opening line of "In a World..." and for changing the face of Movie trailers as we now know them. After the break check out an interesting video profiling the man behind the voice.
For those old enough to remember The Last Dragon, you should be able to recall Leroy's arch enemy The Shogun of Harlem. Julius Carry died August 19 in Los Angeles of pancreatic cancer.
In a recent interview with Total Film.com , Mark Wahlberg comes clean stating his upcoming film Max Payne is his "favorite role so far". "I was lucky to get through it, but it made me stronger and, I hope, wiser. I had a lot of demons to fight. Maybe that's why this character is my favorite role so far," Wahlberg stated. "There's a definite theme of Max fighting the devils inside. There's a lot of action in this movie, but there's also plenty of emotion and psychology. It goes pretty deep."
A spokesperson for the Memphis Regional Medical Center said that Morgan Freeman has been admitted after a car accident. Apparently the star was traveling on Mississippi Highway 32 in a Nissan Maxima when he and a female passenger veered off the road. He is reported to be in serious condition.
We here at the Down in Front News Department usually try to keep our posts about specific projects rather than the personal lives of the people in them. However, every once in a while something happens that's big enough to warrant a break from the usual. A few days ago Stan Winston passed away at the age of 62, ending a seven year battle with Myeloma. While some of the more casual movie goers may not know who Stan was, his creations are some of the greatest ever put on film. You may recognize his work from Terminator, The Alien series, The Predator films, Jurassic Park 2, and most recently Iron Man, where he created the main effect (Monster/Dinosaur/Suit) for each of these films and several others. It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of this genius and wish the best for his family. A list of some of his work after the jump...
As many avid Differ's would know, I enjoyed the new Rambo movie when it was out. The action was more intense then ever, on top of the over the top violence that has been lacking in most movies, came back with a vengeance. Now the action is available for you to bring home for your own enjoyment, but there is more...
hmm, Jake Gyllenhaal huh? well it wasn't my first thought but ok, I'll go with it. Jake Gyllenhaal picked up the main character role of Dastan in this Jerry Bruckheimer produced film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The Hollywood Reporter is also confirming that Gemma Arterton will be taking on the role as Tamina, a "feisty and exotic princess"
It's not this often that I get this excited about a film's promotional photos being released, but then again most photos don't feature one of the single coolest fictional characters ever created! Unfortunately, the second photo released for this film does little to maintain the level of anticipation that the first created, at least it's easy on the eyes if not your fond childhood memories. Photos and more after the jump....
I really hesitate in calling this "News" but MTV has graced our lives with the release of the Nominees for this years MTV Movie Awards. Now, I have alot of issues with MTV these days... and this list really serves as one of the better examples I can come up with as to how MTV has completely sold out. Seriously... Keira Knightley is nominated for Best Female Performance! Now this selection isn't altogether shocking if we were talking about the movie "Atonement" however, MTV is bestowing this honor on the beautiful Ms. Knightley for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Other lowlights include Topher Grace's Venom in Spiderman 3 for Best Villian and Zac Efron in Hairspray for Breakthrough Performance. The full list of atrocities is available after the break...
I often find it pretty strange that I run across some of these news stories when I do. I say this because the other day while watching "Iron Man" for some strange reason I thought to myself "You know... I haven't seen Mel Gibson in anything recently." Could it be that I had just watched the new trailer for Indiana Jones? No idea, but I digress. News came across the wire yesterday that Mel Gibson has signed on to his first starring role in about 6 years, in a new film named "Edge of Darkness"! I know he's done plenty to keep himself in the public eye, be it his some controversial outlook in "The Passion of the Christ" or his Drunken Partying with girls 1/3rd of his age followed by anti-semitic rant to a female police officer during the subsequent DUI stop. Good ole Mel has kept himself busy. However, whatever your personal feelings towards the man are, there is one thing I think we can all agree on: Mel is one of the great actors of our time and he didn't deserve to have his final lead performance in the disappointing "Signs."
