A group of self-absorbed actors sets out to make the most expensive war film. After ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys.
Before the film even starts we are treated to a series of faux trailers courtesy of every actor in Tropic Thunder. It was gut busting hilarious and I didn’t want them to end. I think I even peed a little bit.
I’ll get to everyone but in the mean time can we just go ahead and give Robert Downey a life time achievement award now please? He is likely one of the greatest actor of our generation and just in case there was any doubt, Robert Downey pulls this Tropic Thunder out of his pants and blows everyone away on screen. He plays an Australian actor who is playing an African American soldier in Vietnam. Oh and by the way you have to be brilliantly funny. Not too hard right? He’s incredibly gifted, incredibly funny and he’s worth every dime. I’m naming my first born Robert and writing my favorite two movie quotes above my bed. “Never go full retard” and “pump your breaks son, you’re about to cross the line”
Ben Stiller is glorious. He plays every stereotype you can imagine from the film Platoon to Commando. He’s sporting the cut off sleeves, the awful 80’s style one liners and the dramatic action sequences. Ben tends to over act his roles to the point of it being funny. While this isn’t quite Zoolander in terms of over-acting it is over played and lends it’s self perfectly to the environment and actors acting opposite Ben Stiller.
Last but not lease Jack Black plays a heroine addicted comedian who just so happens to end up in a camp farming heroine. Jack Black on Heroine. Enough Said.
Tropic Thunder is everything I thought It would be and more. What a terrific blend of acting, comedy and action. It’ll be a while before we see another gym like this.
