Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) and Agent Perez, arrive at the depleted police precinct and help veteran Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) sift through Jigsaw's latest grizzly game of victims and piece together the puzzle. However, when SWAT Commander Rigg, the last officer untouched by Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), is suddenly abducted and thrust into the madman's harrowing game, the officer has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of interconnected traps...or face the deadly consequences.
It seems that a Halloween can’t go by now without another addition of Saw. The ultra creepy horror seems to even be picking up steam. I never thought in a million years that it would be on its fourth installment.
I am a fan of the series but like many films that are centered around some kind of complicated puzzle or question, they have to get infinitely more complicated with each release in order to top the previous one. Saw is no different and I find myself more confused by the incredibly complicated plot and even more complicated death machines. It just gets to a point where you have to say, “Ok, common now”. There are just simply too many people involved and too many crisscrossing plots for it to seem even remotely possible. To make matters worse, they left it open for yet another film. I suspect I’ll have to re-watch all previous Saw’s and bring a note pad to me to see the next film.
I don’t think that this necessarily negates the film however. I think for the most part people probably go to see these films to see the new contraptions that Jigsaw has conjured up. I enjoyed the film quite a bit despite being fairly lost within the plot by the end of the film. I am there to see a good horror film with incredibly sadistic instruments of death. Did I get it? Yes I did.
Saw is what it is and there is no end in sight. They are fun films for the Halloween season and I enjoy seeing them. Hopefully they get back to their roots however and ease up a bit on the inter dependant character plot lines.
