Anyone who has ever watched Dragonball Z or played the last two Dragonquest games will undoubtedly notice a striking similarity in the characters and art style. Although at a new company founded by himself, Mistwalker, Hironobu Sakaguchi has not changed his style much. Sadly, different art direction may turn many gamers away from the game, since most of the gamers today are graphic whores. The overall design and flow of the game is fantastic, although slightly linear for my taste. The story revolves around young kids whose village is destroyed by evil and their quest to seek revenge. The same old RPG type story we have all heard and played a million times before. The real draw to Blue Dragon is not with the story, but with the battle mechanics.
In the battles you fight with your shadows, different then any other game I’ve played. Each persons shadow looks different and has different abilities. Your shadows can become different classes, much like in strategy role playing games. There are a few standard classes, such as Warrior, Monk, White mage, as well as a few classes unique to the game. Each of your characters has skill slots which can be filled with a set of abilities from a mastered character class. This gives the player an opportunity to mix and match skill set based upon his preference or necessity. You only start three skill slots, but with the unlocking of a certain class, you can gain more. The classics of RPG classes all apply to Blue Dragon; the white mage heals, the warrior is strong, and the monk cures illness and is unarmed.
Although there is not much new to this series, there is a visually aesthetic feel to it that just makes it pleasant to play. The voice acting is superb and well done. The abilities and battle HUD is very well crafted, with various fully animated screens. On top of a lush world to explore, as many as eight characters to control, the ability to search almost anything you see for useful items and a pretty decent story, Blue Dragon is definitely a must have game. You might want to avoid renting this game, as it comes with three discs and might suck you into a lot of late fees.
